What is the difference between B_normal and B_intrinsic in the BH Curve window?

 

The relationship is: B_normal = B_intrinsic + μ₀H


B_normal represents the total magnetic flux density in the material, including both the applied external field and the material’s response. Mathematically:


B = μ₀(H + M), where M is the magnetization.


This is what is typically measured and used in most standard magnetic simulations.


B_intrinsic represents only the material’s contribution to the magnetic field, excluding the effect of the applied field:


B_intrinsic = B - μ₀H.


This corresponds to the magnetization of the material itself and is especially important when modeling permanent magnets.


In practical terms, when defining material properties in Maxwell, the normal BH curve is usually used for typical simulations. For permanent magnets, intrinsic B values may be needed for accurate characterization.
