How to handle and convert geometry in a Spaceclaim or Discovery file that is in “Large” length scale to “Standard” length scale?

This article informs the reader on how to convert geometry in a SpaceClaim file that is inadvertently set to Large length scale when Standard is desired.  One cannot change the length of scale of SpaceClaim model; one can only set the length scale for future new model documents.

In an example, the CAD geometry of a component assembly is located several kilometers away from the origin.  When the CAD geometry is imported into SpaceClaim or Discovery, the length scale is automatically set to Large, even if the component assembly system can fit inside a cubic meter.

The steps below illustrate how to convert the geometry to Standard length scale.

Settings for Length Scale are found in File > SpaceClaim Options > Units

  1. Open the file with Large length scale

  2. Use the move tool to move the geometry closer to the origin
  3. After the geometry is close to the origin, save the geometry as a step file
  4. Set the Length scale for All New Documents to Standard
  5. Exit the model with Large length scale
  6. Open a new document and confirm that the Length scale is set to Standard
  7. Open the step file of the geometry and confirm that the units and length scale
